1:18イエス・キリストの誕生の次第はこうであった。母マリヤはヨセフと婚約していたが、まだ一緒にならない前に、聖霊によって身重になった。 1:19夫ヨセフは正しい人であったので、彼女のことが公けになることを好まず、ひそかに離縁しようと決心した。 1:20彼がこのことを思いめぐらしていたとき、主の使が夢に現れて言った、「ダビデの子ヨセフよ、心配しないでマリヤを妻として迎えるがよい。その胎内に宿っているものは聖霊によるのである。 1:21彼女は男の子を産むであろう。その名をイエスと名づけなさい。彼は、おのれの民をそのもろもろの罪から救う者となるからである」。 1:22すべてこれらのことが起ったのは、主が預言者によって言われたことの成就するためである。すなわち、

1:23「見よ、おとめがみごもって男の子を産むであろう。
その名はインマヌエルと呼ばれるであろう」。
これは、「神われらと共にいます」という意味である。 1:24ヨセフは眠りからさめた後に、主の使が命じたとおりに、マリヤを妻に迎えた。 1:25しかし、子が生れるまでは、彼女を知ることはなかった。そして、その子をイエスと名づけた。

この短い聖句を読むだけで聖母マリアとその夫であるヨセフ、そして生誕の時のイエス様の事が書かれていて、とても心が痛みます。ここに書かれているように母マリアは婚約者ヨセフがいましたが、まだ結婚もしていないのに身重（妊娠）になったので、夫ヨセフはひそかに離縁しようと決心しました。普通で有れば婚約者が、まだ一緒にもなっていない段階で妊娠したのですから離縁は当たり前です。しかし、当時のイスラエルでは未婚の女性が妊娠した場合、大衆が集まって不倫な女性に対して石を持って投げつけて殺すのが当たり前でありました。しかし、正しい人ヨセフは神様から心配しないでマリアを妻として迎えるがよいと言われて向かい入れるのですが、ヨセフとしては身の覚えのないマリアのお腹が段々大きくなるにつれて、あなたのお腹の中にいる子のお父さんは誰なのかと何回となく問い詰めたと思います。だからマリアのお腹の中にいる子に対して全く情がいかなかったので、出産の為の準備が出来ず馬小屋で仕方なく生まれたのであります。その証拠に子が生まれるまでは彼女を知ることはなかったと書いてあります。この様に聖母マリアは死を覚悟してイエスを身ごもりイエス様の誕生はしましたが、神様も人類を罪悪世界から救う為に、ご苦労されて歴史を摂理されて来られました。

1:18 It was as soon as the birth of Jesus Christ. Her mother, Mary, was engaged to Joseph, but before she wasn't together yet, she was taken up by the Holy Spirit. 1:19 Since her husband Joseph was the right man, he didn't like to be public and decided to secretly divorce her. 1:20 As he was pondering this, the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, don't worry, let Mary be your wife. What is in her womb? 1:21 She will give birth to a boy. Name him Jesus, for he will save my people from their sins." 1:22 All these things happened for the fulfillment of what the Lord said by the prophets. That is,

1:23 "Behold, a maiden will bear a baby and will give birth to a boy.
Its name will be called Immanuel."
This means "God is with us." 1:24 After waking up from sleep, Joseph welcomed Mary to his wife, as the LORD's messenger had commanded. 1:25 But I didn't know her until the baby was born. And he named the child Jesus.

Just reading this short verse tells us about the Virgin Mary, her husband, Joseph, and Jesus at the time of her birth. Mother Mary had a fiancée Joseph as written here, but since she was not married yet and became pregnant (pregnant), her husband Joseph secretly decided to divorce.
